In twenty years, I would like to see myself as a filmmaker getting regular work in the industry. Most of my work would be somewhat arthouse and surrealist, but would garner a positive reaction within that community, and perhaps some of my films would go even go mainstream and bring my work to a wider audience. I could even be nominated for an Academy Award, and possibly become the first lesbian winner of Best Picture! I would also want to use my voice as a filmmaker make changes to the MPAA, and make it easier for smaller, independent films to make it through the rating system without suffering or having to make considerable cuts. I would live with my wife in LA, close to both my work and my family. In my free time, I would write poetry and keep reptiles and frogs.
Though it is not necessary to go to film school or study film to become a great director --- Guy Ritchie, Wes Craven, and even Hitchcock never attended film school --- My action plan is to major in Film Studies at whatever college I end up going to. I plan to pursue a post graduate program relating to film, possibly at the American Film Institute where my inspiration, David Lynch, received his film education. While in school, I would seek out the valuable connections that are so important in the film industry, and after graduating would use those connections to begin working my way up. In a worst case scenario, there’s always the phrase ‘those who can’t do, teach’; I could get a job in a high school or community college teaching film. Whatever happens, I really just want to be involved with film my entire life.
